VTMO is an organosilane having bifunctional nature. It has two reactive sites: (a) reactive vinyl group, (b) hydrolysable inorganic trimethoxysilyl group. The dual reactive nature allows VTMO to bind to both organic polymers (thermoplastics, thermosets, and elastomers) and inorganic materials (glass, fillers, metals, etc). VTMO is known to act as a coupling agent, crosslinking agent, surface modifier and adhesion promoter.
It is a colorless, highly volatile liquid having density a little lower than water (around 0.97g/mL).

VTMO (vinyl trimethoxy silane) is used for preparing moisture cured polymers. The process involves peroxide-initiated grafting of silane during extrusion. The polymer can be used as a thermoplast even after grafting. The polymer chains cross-link and curing happens only on treating with water waterbath, steambath or moisture at ambient conditions. Catalyst are found useful in accelerating the reaction.
This mechanism has found applications in cable industry and pipe industry to name a few.
This type of crosslinking is found to improve the properties namely:
(a) Heat resistance,
(b) Abrasion Resistance,
(c) Chemical Resistance, and
(d) shock and tear resistance.
VTMO (Vinyl Tri Methoxy Silane) has two reaction site and it has the ability to react with both organic polymers and inorganic fillers. As a result it acts as adhesion promotor for various polymer having filler loading. The Silanol (Si-OH) group bonds with the inorganic filler thus making it hydrophic. As a result, it improves the dispersion of filler in the polymer matrix, makes the processing easy and reduces the melt viscosity.
VTMO (Vinyl Trimethoxy Silane) can be used for pre-treatment of glass, ceramic and metal surfaces in order to improve adhesion of coating on these surfaces thereby improving the corrosion resistance.
VTMO (Vinyl Tri Methoxy Silane) is known to aggressively react with water and hence it can be used as a Moisture Scavenger. It can successfully remove traces of water. This property can be used in various applications like sealant industry.
